The First Day
Getting a new tattoo is exciting, but properly caring for it from the very start is crucial to ensuring it heals beautifully and retains its colour and detail. The first 24 hours are especially important as your skin begins the healing process. Follow these steps to ensure your new tattoo is properly taken care of!
Second Skin Bandage
The second skin bandage is designed to stay on for about 24 hours to protect your new tattoo. During this period, you’ll likely notice a buildup of ink, plasma, and blood under the bandage—don’t be alarmed, this is normal! This buildup is part of your skin's natural healing process, as it works to close and repair the tattooed area. You might also experience some warmth, slight swelling, or redness around the tattoo. These symptoms are common and should gradually decrease as your tattoo begins to heal.
However, if you notice any unusual reactions, such as persistent redness, a rash, or intense itching, remove the bandage and monitor the area closely. If symptoms worsen or you suspect an allergic reaction to the bandage material, consult your doctor to determine the best course of action.
Second Skin Removal
When it’s time to remove the second skin, it’s essential to do so gently. Avoid any rough or quick movements, as these could cause irritation or disrupt healing. Here are some steps to safely remove your bandage:
Use warm water: First, run warm water over the bandage to help loosen its adhesive. You can do this in the shower or by holding a warm, wet cloth over the area for a few minutes.
Peel carefully: Locate a corner of the second skin and slowly begin peeling it away from your skin, pulling in a steady, smooth motion and moving away from yourself. Avoid tugging, as this can be painful and may pull on the skin around your tattoo.
Be patient: Take your time removing the bandage to minimize discomfort. If you feel resistance, apply more warm water to ease the process until the bandage comes off fully.
Cling Wrap
In some cases, cling wrap is used instead of second skin. This wrap provides temporary protection for up to 3 hours and helps prevent outside contaminants from reaching the tattoo. Underneath, your artist will apply a thin layer of a product known as “tattoo slip,” which helps keep the area moisturized and prevents the wrap from sticking to the tattoo.
After removing the cling wrap, wash the tattoo thoroughly. Use lukewarm water and mild, unscented soap to gently remove any remaining tattoo slip, ink, or plasma. Rinse until there is no greasy residue, and pat the area dry with a clean towel. Avoid rubbing, as the area is still sensitive.
Remember, a little extra care on the first day of your tattoo can make a big difference in the final outcome. By following these aftercare steps, you’re giving your tattoo the best chance to heal beautifully, preserving its colours and details. If you ever have concerns or notice anything unusual during the healing process, don’t hesitate to reach out!
